Waste man is a sculpture made from scrap wood. The sculpture honours the famous ‘Thinker’ made by Auguste Rodin. The sculpture questions our definition of waste.
For this project, I collaborated with Avalex, a company responsible for waste collection in Delft, Rijswijk, and Den Haag. They asked me to help improve the recycling performance at the recycling centre, where a wide range of household waste is collected. As we become increasingly aware of how scarce our planet’s resources are, we realise that our waste should be seen as a valuable resource rather than something to simply dispose of. To convey this message, I created an artwork made entirely from recycled materials, inspiring visitors to rethink their relationship with waste. The piece, inspired by Rodin’s The Thinker, encourages visitors to “rethink” how they perceive discarded materials. It is now permanently exhibited at the recycle centre in Den Haag.
